Attacks Accumulations by Purging Downwards
Da Huang has excellent purgative properties to treat a wide variety of accumulations including constipation, epigastric distention, fullness and abdominal pain that gets worse with pressure and palpation, Best for constipation due to excess heat. Also for excess heat in the hollow organ during yangming stage of illness which is characterized bu high fever, delirium, semi-consciousness and convulsions. Da Huang purges accumulation and eliminates heat to relieve the condition and preserve yin. Heat and qi stagnation usually accompany constipation indicated by abdominal bloating, distention and pain. Da Huang should be used if heat and constipation are more severe than bloating, distention and pain.

 Typical Usage of Concentrated Extracts
1 to 2 grams per day (3 to 5 grams in severe cases) or as directed by your health practitioner. Reduce dose by 1/2 when used internally.
Cautions and Contraindications
  • Extremely bitter and cold so it may damage the Spleen and Stomach. Use with caution. Possible side effects: nausea, vomiting and poor appetite
  • Contraindicated where there is no constipation or blood stagnation
  • Use with caution when menstruating or in postpartum women without stasis
  • Do not use with qi or blood deficiency or during pregnancy
  • Nursing mothers use great caution, Da Huang entering breast milk causes diarrhea in the infant
