Ancestry and Craftsmanship
Fred and Barry Shapiro are the third and fourth generation of a family of furniture craftsmen. Their family immigrated to Boston, Massachusetts, from Russia in 1920 and established Brighton Upholstering and Brighton mattress company.

The Shapiro's firms flourished in the twentieth century due to their attention to customer service and high quality manufacturing standards. In 1991 a customer with multiple chemicals sensitivities asked for a chemical free sofa. The exhaustive three year research that followed resulted in the first chemical free sofa and the birth of Furnature.

Today, Furnature designs, manufactures and markets an extensive line of chairs, sofas, loveseats, and ottomans, as well as mattresses and bedding using only non-toxic, natural and organic ingredients.

We design and craft fully-upholstered furniture to any size, shape and decorating scheme in our fabric or yours. The Furnature design team works with you to create healthy, upholstered furniture that meets all your needs. Accountability
Pure Organically Grown
Furnature's organic cotton is hand picked. The ball of cotton is gently taken from the plant and shaken to remove the seeds. This simple process eliminates most of the impurities found in all other cottons. Absent of these impurities, the cotton is purer, more resilient and less fragrant.

Europe's oldest and most prestigious certification agency, KRAV of Sweden, has certified our organic cotton. Their stamp of approval is not only a guarantee of organic standards, but also that social rights are observed in the production of our cotton.

Furnature uses only pure, seedless handpicked organically grown and harvested cotton. Cotton grown in industrialized countries is saturated with pesticides and herbicides plus it absorbs all of the chemicals that modern fertilizers deposit into the soil. Most cotton whether organic, green or non-organic is machine picked and full of impurities including leaves, twigs, crop dust, cotton seeds and tannic acid. Tannic acid comes from the cottonseed oil and emits a strong odor. As the cottonseeds get crushed in the ginning process the oil from the seed gets absorbed into the cotton fiber and the tannic acid becomes rancid. This is the reason cotton has a very strong odor.

97% Pure Natural Rubber
Natural rubber is the milk or sap tapped from the Hevea Brasiliensis - the common rubber tree. Our Natural Rubber cushions consist of 97% of the sap from tree. The Hevea sap contains an antibacterial substance that is a natural dust-mite repellent, resistant to mold and at the end of the furniture life-cycle, the rubber breaks down because it is a natural biodegradable substance. Only two additional natural elements are added - Soda Ash and Zinc.

Natural rubber should not be confused with Latex. Latex is a generic term for sap from the rubber tree, which contains various stabilizers, bonding agents, petroleum based products and chemicals. These synthetic elements are used to water down, stretch out and stabilize the rubber. Mainstream latex products allow the harvested sap to sit in large vats for many days and sometimes months.

Natural Rubber does not need these additional elements because the harvested sap is poured into a mold within 5 to 6 hours. We believe our facility is the only on earth that uses this method.

Natural rubber has many attributes important in furniture manufacturing. A natural rubber foam core is ideal for furniture; flexible yet stable, it is absorbent, resilient and provides excellent heat and moisture regulation and air circulation.

Maple Wood
Furnature uses only hard rock, kiln dried Maple for furniture frames. All of the interior wood used in our frames is left unfinished. Exposed wood, which appears on the arms and legs of some of our styles, can be finished in our stain or one you supply. We use AFM Safecoat stains that a low VOC content which provides a light translucent finish that exposes the natural grain of the wood. For a traditional deep rich finish we recommend that you supply us with a mainstream finish color number from Minwax. We will then seal the finish with AFM Safecoat Sealant.

Furnature Construction Features
All furniture frames are made from 5/4, untreated, kiln-dried hard rock Maple. The joints are double-doweled and glued with water base glue. The corner blocks are glued and screwed for additional support. Organic canvas duck is applied on the inside arms for support to resist sagging. All loose cushions have either an innerspring core blanketed with organic batting or a solid natural rubber core. The entire frame and all cushions are encapsulated in organic barrier cloth to prevent dust mite infestation.

Furniture Options
Upholstered or Slipcovered
All Furnature styles are permanently covered in organic muslin barrier cloth. The exterior cover for each loose cushion is zippered and removable from eh cushion when you decide to upholster or slipcover. When the piece is upholstered the decorative fabric is permanently attached to the body of the furniture frame. each slipcover is custom made to fit the particular model you have ordered and has a removable zippered cover which fits over the body.

Cushions
Furnature also manufactures new or replacement cushions for chairs, sofas or window seats. We use either innerspring of natural rubber filling. Covers can be made in our fabric or yours. Please contact us for pricing.

Throw Pillows
Throw Pillows are stuffed with organic cotton and covered with muslin barrier cloth. A self-welted zippered cover is made from the same decorative fabric used on your furniture. Pillows are 18" x 18" and require one additional yard of fabric. Custom sizes also available.

Skirts
Most upholstered styles pictured with skirts are available without skirts.

Armsleeves
Fitted arm covers are available for each style.

Test Kits
Furnature's test kit contains samples of the natural components used in the construction of our furniture. Each individual sample ingredient is wrapped in aluminum foil. The kits have been designed for those with allergies and chemical sensitivities to mainstream furniture. Furnature's products cannot be returned due to allergic reactions; therefore, we urge you to test the ingredients before your purchase. If there is any ingredient that you cannot tolerate, please contact us. We may have a substitute. Test kits can be shipped anywhere in the continental U.S. The cost will be credited toward your furniture purchase.

Or shop a fabric store near you, give us a pattern name, number, color and manufacturer's name - we may be able to order your fabric directly from the manufacturer. Please contact us and we can send you swatches until you find the fabric that's just right for you!

SafeWash
Safe Washing
Our SafeWash system removes many unpleasant fabric finishes and dye odors from almost any fabric. We put your fabric or ours through our SafeWash system. See price list for cost. Please add 15% more fabric to allow for shrinkage.

Placing Your Order
To place an order please visit the web store links at the top of this page or call us between 12:00 noon and 5:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time Monday through Thursday at (386) 437-0020.

Furnature Payment Terms
A 75% deposit with your order is required. You will be notified when your furniture has been completed. At this time, your balance is due. When final payment is received we will call you to make delivery arrangements. Payments can be made by check, Mastercard, VISA, DiscoverCard or American Express.

Cancellations and returns.
Since all products are custom made, no cancellations will be accepted once your order is in production. We cannot provide refunds, exchanges or credits under any circumstances. Therefore we encourage you to order a test kit if you have allergies or chemical sensitivities. You are welcome to come to the factory and inspect your Furnature prior to shipping.

Customer's Own Fabric
We have noted on individual web pages the yardage required for each piece. Proper identification of your fabric is of utmost importance. To avoid unnecessary delays, make certain all information is provided on each roll.

After you place your Furnature order and prior to shipment of your fabric, please mail us a swatch with your name, the specific application instructions, showing the face side of fabric, the top of the pattern and centering of a special motif if desired. Please indicate to which piece of furniture the fabric is to be applied. Unless instructions are clearly stated we reserve the right to use our best judgment concerning the application of your fabric. We also reserve the right to reject any fabric that we believe is unsuitable for your furniture.

If the fabric is not shipped directly from you, please indicate the name of the company shipping the fabric to us, the pattern name and color and the yardage being shipped.

We will provide you with 2 copies of your sales invoice when we receive your deposit along with the shipping address. Please attach one of these copies to the fabric when shipping to us for clear identification. All fabrics sent must be pre-paid. CODs will not be accepted.

All dimensions listed are approximate due to variations in hand crafting.

Production Time
Production time is approximately 12-16 weeks not including delivery time.

Shipping
Due to the sensitive nature of our products, we us a White Glove delivery service. Your Furnature is brought to your home and unpacked. All packaging materials are taken away. Delivery charges vary and are determined on an order-by-order basis. PLEASE INSPECT ALL ITEMS CAREFULLY AT TIME OF DELIVERY - CHECK LEGS AND EDGES. In the event of damages incurred in transit please have the driver make a notation on their delivery papers and he must make a notation on your delivery papers. All claims must be made directly with the carrier and Furnature must be notified of the problem. Unauthorized returns will not be accepted.

We have selected the most durable fabrics available. Since New Berolina MT manufacturers do not guarantee their products for wearability, shrinkage or color fastness, we cannot assume responsibility therefore no warranties or guaranteed are implied.
