Typical Usage of Concentrated Extracts
1 to 2 grams (maximum 3-6 grams) per day or as directed by your health practitioner. Used in decoction, powder, pills or syrup; internally or externally. Raw Gan Cao more strongly purges fire, eliminates toxins, moistens the Lung and stops cough. It is commonly used to treat throat soreness and pain, various infections with formation of pus and abscess, cough with hot phlegm and food or drug poisoning. Honey processed Gan Cao has a sweeter taste and warmer nature to tonify Spleen, benefit qi, moisten the Lung and stop cough. It is stronger than raw Gan Cao to tonify qi.

Cautions and Contraindications

Sweet in nature, it creates dampness and is therefore contraindicated in cased of nausea, vomiting, chest and abdominal fullness and distention due to accumulation of dampness
Incompatible with Gan Sui (Euphorbiae), Da Ji Euphorbiae seu Knoxiae), Yuan Hua (Flos Genkwa) and Hai Zao (Sargassum)
Large doses or chronic use of Gan Cao are contraindicated in cases of edema, kidney disorders, hypokalemia, hypertension and congestive heart failure
Overdose or chronic use of Gan Cao may cause edema, elevated blood pressure, weak extremities, numbness, sodium retention, potassium loss, dizziness and headache
