Bee propolis is the substance formed by the boron liposome secreted by the plant bud callus, the secretion of the digestive gland wax gland of worker bees and the interaction between these two types of substances. Bee propolis is neutral in nature and non-toxic. it has the reputation in many countries as being the best product to purify blood, promote cell activity, fight illness and beautify the skin. In Europe, bee propolis has become the standing health food for the family and it has the reputation of purple gold.
Propolis is a resinous substance gathered by the bees from the leaf buds or the bark of certain trees and bushes. The bees then use the propolis as a 'cement' that lines the walls of the hive in which they prepare honey, pollen, royal jelly and other related by-products. Nature has provided bees with this substance to keep them and their hives free of germs in spite of 40,000 to 50,000 bees being crammed into close quarters in the hive.
The green to brownish glue-like material with an aromatic smell and slightly bitter taste is made up to 50 to 55 percent resin and balsam, 40 percent wax, 10 percent other, depending on what kind of foliages available.
Researches found the therapeutic properties of propolis come from substances call flavonoids found in the resin.
Propolis is rich in minerals, B-vitamins and antibiotics and works to raise the body's natural resistance by stimulating it to produce its own disease fighting defenses.
Bees collect propolis, treat it with their own enzymes and use the sticky material to patch holes or cracks in the hive. This natural 'cement' protects the insects and their home from contamination, moisture and germs.
"The bees have relied on it since the beginning of time," says Dr. Kupsinel, a Florida physician. "The bees must be doing something right because beehives contain less bacteria and are far more sterile than hospitals," says Dr. Kupsinel.
Ethanolic extract of propolis has remarkable medical properties, including protection of mice against gamma irradiation. Its anti-oxidative effect has been attributed to its radical scavenging ability. This manuscript demonstrates the ability of increasing amount of EEP to inhibit luminol H2O2 chemiluminescence in vitro, and suggests that its anti-oxidative capacity is partly due to its high content of flavonoids.
