Ginseng & Zizyphus Combination has been used for many centuries to tonify Heart Yin and stabilize the Spirit. Heart Yin deficiency is characterized by mental and emotional instability, absentmindedness, insomnia (difficulty falling asleep), heart palpitations, constipation, and sores on the tongue or inside of the mouth. It has also been used for a lingering fever with no inflammation and a dry red tongue with little coating and a red tip. This formula should be used for extended periods of time when treating insomnia. Because of its heavy moist quality, it is recommended that a good Qi tonic may be used with it. Ginseng & Zizyphus Combination should not be used with people who have digestive weakness or sticky phlegm unless these are specifically addressed.
Herbal Ingredients:
Ron Teeguarden Ginseng & Zizyphus
Ginseng & Zizyphus Combination nourishes Yin Jing, and pacifies the spirit (Shen), strengthens the Heart, and builds Blood. Thus it tonifies all three treasures. This formula is specifically suited to those who are experiencing Yin deficiency, especially if accompanied by hot, inflammatory symptoms (called "false fire") and lack of stability of Shen.
This formula gets at the root of restlessness and insomnia. It is not a sleeping pill. However, over a relatively short period of time it can prove very effective. Furthermore, you will feel much more energetic during the day. Ginseng & Zizyphus Combination is a major formula for the relief of the type of insomnia where it is difficult to fall asleep. This formula should be used for extended periods of time when treating insomnia. It nourishes Qi and Yin Jing, and Stabilizes Spirit, strengthens the Heart, and builds blood. Thus it tonifies all three treasures. This formula is specifically suited to those who are experiencing Yin deficiency, especially if accompanied by irritability, agitation, insomnia and lack of stability of Shen.
In this formula raw Rehmannia, Asparagus root, Scrophularia, Ophiopogon, Biota and Zizyphus nourish the Yin, purge Fire, moisten dryness and stabilize the emotions. Raw Rehmannia, Coptis and Scrophularia clear Heart Fire and bring heat downwards. Salvia and raw Rehmannia cool hot blood.
Zizyphus, Biota, Poria, Polygala, Salvia, Schizandra and Dang Gui all calm the spirit and relieve emotional stress. Dang Gui helps generate more blood, while Dang Gui and Salvia invigorate Blood circulation, dispersing stagnant blood. Polygala, Acorus and Platycodon resolve phlegm obstruction, allowing the energies to flow more smoothly in the Upper Burner, particularly in the Heart and the Lungs.
Codonopsis and Poria nourish Heart Qi. Codonopsis, Poria and Schizandra digestive tonics, strengthen the internal organs, and have strong stress-relieving action. These herbs also prevent the potentially "slippery" Herbs (Rehmannia, Asparagus, Biota and Dang Gui) from disruption digestive functions. Schizandra balances all of the organs and locks the Essence, preventing it from leaking away.
Please note throughout history in China and in many areas Ginseng wasn't always available. Codonopsis is believed to have an action similar to that of Ginseng, but milder. It is often used in place of Ginseng in formulas that actually call for Ginseng to be used as a main Qi tonic, especially when the purpose of the formula is to invigorate the Spleen and Lung functions. This is totally acceptable in the Chinese herbal system. Therefore although this formula is named Ginseng & Zizyphus, Codonopsis is used in place of Ginseng.
