Four of the over 80 saponins in Jiao Gu Lan are identical to those of ginseng, and are about four times as concentrated. Jiao Gu Lan's other saponins are directly related to the ginsenosides found in ginseng root. Jiao Gu Lan shares many of the same superior herbal qualities as ginseng. It was also known to calm the spirit (Shen) and relieve asthma. Recently however, research conducted by the Health Department of the People's Republic of China has shown that Jiaogulan effectively lowers cholesterol as well.
